Chinese artistic and religious reception of the first illustrated prints-series by Jesuit missionaries in early 17th century. An iconographical and iconological study in Sino-Christian art
Yi Qu

The arrival of the Jesuits in China in 1582 marked the beginning of a new period in Sino-Western artistic exchanges. From the beginning of the missionary activities in China, the Jesuits were aware of the importance of the illustrations for christianizing the Chinese population. They used the Christian illustrations as a tool for the religious education. Since the arrival of Jesuits, the books contain the illustrations and engravings from the western countries were widely circulated and could be easily copied or adapted by Chinese wood-engravers. The proposal of this project, "Chinese artistic and religious reception of the first illustrated prints-series by Jesuit missionaries in early 17th century - An iconographical and iconological study in Sino-Christian art", points on the artistic representation from the adaptation of the Christian religion to the Chinese culture and customs by the Jesuits. By analyzing these Christian illustrations from 17th century, we can reveal how the Jesuits missionaries attempted to spread Christianity and tried to christianize the Chinese population by using the Sino-Christian imageries.
