Jacob Burckhardt Prize The Jacob Burckhardt Prize was founded in 2004. The biennial Prize is awarded to outstanding young scholars, chosen by the Directors of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institut together with the Friends of the KHI, the "Verein zur Förderung des Kunsthistorischen Instituts in Florenz e.V." The Prize, together with its cash award, also includes a three-month research period in Florence and the invitation to give a public lecture and publish a paper in the KHI journal, the Mitteilungen des Kunsthistorischen Institutes in Florenz. The Prize is named after the Swiss cultural and art historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897), whose pioneering works 'Der Cicerone. Eine Anleitung zum Genuß der Kunstwerke Italiens' (1855) and 'Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien. Ein Versuch' (1860) have left an enduring mark on Art History and whose research also led to Italian research becoming the central paradigm of the still young academic discipline. The foundation of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz as the first German art-historical research institute in Italy in 1897 should be understood in this context.
